    north = nord N
    south = sud S
    east = est E
    west = ouest O
    nord, sud, est, ouest is the normal order in French as well as English.
    northeast = nord-est NE
    northwest = nord-ouest NO
    north-northeast = nord-nord-est NNE
    east-northeast = est-nord-est ENE
    Where?
    Compass points in French are not normally written with a capital letter. However, when they refer to a specific region in phrases such as I love the North or he lives in the North, and it is clear where this North is, without any further specification such as of France or of Europe, then they are written with a capital letter, as they often are in English, too. In the following examples, north and nord stand for any compass point word.
    I love the North

    Normally, however, these words do not take a capital letter:

    Where to?
    French has fewer ways of expressing this than English has ; vers le is usually safe:
    to go north
    = aller vers le nord
    to head towards the north
    = se diriger vers le nord
    to go northwards
    = aller vers le nord
    to go in a northerly direction
    = aller vers le nord
    a northbound ship
    = un bateau qui se dirige vers le nord
    With some verbs, such as to face, the French expression changes:
    the windows face north

    Where from?
    The usual way of expressing from the is du:

    The French words nord, sud, est and ouest are really nouns, so when they are used as adjectives they are invariable.

    Nautical bearings
    The preposition by is translated by quart in expressions like the following:

    EUSKERA
    Euskera (or Basque) is one of several official languages in Spain. It is spoken in the northern Spanish region of Euskadi (the Basque Country), in the neighbouring province of Navarra, and in the Basque region of France. Its origin is unknown as it is not an Indo-European language. For decades euskera was either banned or officially unrecognized, and as a consequence it was mainly spoken only in rural areas. However, in recent times it has re-emerged with the support of the Basque nationalist movement and is being promoted as the official language for use in schools and education, and a growing number of schoolchildren can now speak the language. Today euskera is used by an increasing number of well-known authors, including the internationally acclaimed Bernardo Atxaga.

    (Sp. model spelled same [t∫aparal] < chaparro 'short, stubby' probably of pre-Roman origin, and apparently related to the dialectal Basque term txapar(ra), a diminutive of saphar(ra) 'thicket' or 'hedge' plus the Spanish collective suffix -al)
       Texas: 1842. As Watts observes, it appears that this term originally applied exclusively to the scrub oak. It now refers to a number of thicket-forming, often thorny shrubs or small trees, and to a large dense thicket formed by these plants. It may also refer to a plain covered with such unruly brush (see also brasada). Clark indicates that this term applies especially to shrubs and trees of the genera Acacia, Ceanothus, Condalia, Forestiera, and Quercus. Hendrickson notes that this term has become recognized throughout the United States because of its use in western films. The DRAE references chaparral as a place covered in chaparros, which may be either a variety of shrublike oak trees with many branches, or a Central American malpighiaceous bush with clustered flowers, round fruit, and opposite leaves that are thick and petiolate. This second plant grows on dry plains and has thick, knotty, resistant branches used to make walking sticks. Santamaría defines chaparral as either the common name of a wild rhamnaceous plant native to central and northern Mexico ( Condalia obovata), or a place abounding in chaparros. Santamaría gives several definitions for chaparro. It is generally a bush found in tropical regions in the Americas whose rough-textured leaves are sometimes used as sandpaper and whose bark is rich in tannin. On the southern coast of Mexico, it refers to several varieties of oak trees of the genus Quercus. In Tabasco, Mexico, it is an isolated mass of vegetation formed by vines and short trees, and in all of Mexico it is the common name given to the Aythia collaris, a plant native to the northern part of the continent. Islas concurs with the definition given by Santamaría for chaparro in Tabasco, Mexico, but he says that it is a low-lying thicket.

       According to Blevins, a cowboy pastime in which a rooster is buried up to its neck, and a rider tries to pull or jerk it out of the ground while riding a horse. The rooster seldom survives the game. Islas references a similar game, known in Mexico as carrera del pollo or carrera del gallo. He says it is common at parties held on ranches and in communities in the northern and central regions of Mexico. In the Mexican version of the game, one rider holds a rooster in his right hand and a second rider pursues him, trying to grab the rooster.
